Production machinists use machinery to create things such as tools and automobile parts. Some parts produced are made to order, so reading blueprints and shop drawings is an essential part of the position.
Production machinists are generally assigned to one or more machines and expected to meet a quota production. They must always monitor their machines to ensure that they are working correctly; when they are not, troubleshooting may be necessary. Regular and periodic maintenance must also be carried out on these machines.
Basic arithmetic skills are important in this position in order to properly measure items needed in production. Much of the work of a production machinist is done independently, so it is important to be self-driven. Attention to detail is also important, as the goods produced must be assessed for quality. If goods are not coming out as they should, the machinist should evaluate the situation to determine what is wrong.
Working as a production machinist may involve working in a noisy and hectic environment, so it is important not to be sensitive to such conditions. Attention to safety requirements while achieving quality and quantity goals is also important, and work areas must always be maintained and kept tidy.
Generally, a minimum of a high school diploma is required for this position. Some entry-level positions are available, while other positions may require the machinist to have at least a few years of experience in a related position.
Production Machinist Tasks
Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments.
Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines.
Operate various types of machine tools to perform progressive machining.
Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications.
Detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust machine controls as necessary.
