Quality control is an important part of this position, and these engineers must establish parameters to meet all specifications for an optimal molding environment and ensure they are maintained within it. They often create these specifications themselves, as well as research and develop new processes for manufacturing plastic and rubber. They are also responsible for the machinery and may even develop new machinery themselves, as well as analyze existing machinery to ensure that it is running smoothly. Troubleshooting may be necessary when problems arise.
After the manufacturing process, they will review validation reports and create new reports based on any findings. They also monitor the mold-flow and analyze the manufactured plastics for stress and fatigue. They may work with a variety of staff members and teams, so communication skills are important in this position to work well with customers, suppliers, and co-workers within their organizations, including in quality control, manufacturing, and management.
A bachelor's degree in engineering may be a minimum requirement for this position, and some employers prefer those who have a master's degree.
