Release of information specialists are tasked with providing different types of information to the appropriate parties for their organizations, including facilitating data while following specific guidelines and regulations to protect clients' confidentiality. They are also responsible for providing excellent customer service when clients approach with queries in-person, over the phone, or through digital means, and should work well in a team setting as well as on their own with minimal supervision.
Release of information specialists must be proficient with data entry software to log information regarding request-interactions and send documents, images, and other records as requested. Interpersonal and computer skills are important to work well with others and operate office equipment such as faxes and copiers, and they also use a personal computer to access database information, send emails, and respond to release of information requests.
These specialists should have thorough knowledge of word processors, database queries, and spreadsheet programs, and must be organized and pay close attention to detail when redacting and reading information reports. They typically work in an office environment during regular business hours and may report their progress to a supervisor within the department, and should also be familiar with copy service, requesting records from other locations, and keeping accurate records for future use.
A high school diploma is generally required for this position, and prior experience in the field is highly beneficial. Industry certifications are also helpful.
