Human resource (HR) departments within large companies and corporations typically employ at least one HR relocation specialist; this specialized HR employee helps employees who have been promoted or moved to new departments and require relocation to a new area. They also work with newly-hired employees who may need to relocate by providing relevant information and helping to resolve the many details that such a relocation may require.
Relocation specialists focus on securing the logistics surrounding a move, and will often recommend movers and arrange their services. For companies which relocate employees regularly, these specialists may maintain contracts with specific movers or vehicle providers to develop a better group rate for their company.
Relocation specialists also assist with finding new living arrangements for these employees; this can be as small in scale as providing housing or rental listings, though it also involves interviewing employees to understand, and attempt to match, their housing and neighborhood needs. They may also work with local housing and real estate companies and managers to find the best matches for relocating employees. In most cases, at least some relocation expenses are paid by the company.
Candidates for the position should generally have a college degree and/or prior experience in human resources. Many specialists have practical experience related to their specific area and may have some work history with real estate. Because relocation specialists are constantly working with employees, outside contractors, movers, and realtors, strong communication and organizational skills are essential for the job. These specialists typically work in office environments, and the job may involve regularly-scheduled travel as well.
