Positions as a research department manager are available in a wide variety of industries and businesses, as many large companies conduct internal research for products and services on a regular basis. This will include everything from basic non-tech companies to highly-advanced industries such as medicine or electronics. Because of this variety, the required experience often depends on the particular job, but many require specific knowledge of the industry to succeed in this role.
Most employers require an educational background, including a Bachelor’s degree in Business or an industry-specific field, along with prior work experience which includes management activity and proves knowledge of the industry.
The role generally consists of management activities, including scheduling and planning projects, supervising workers on said projects, overseeing equipment maintenance, and maintaining safety and health standards at all times. More specific tasks may be required based on the exact position, but most duties will revolve around planning and/or supervising. Many positions also require specific training by organizations such as OSHA or for specific pieces of equipment, but proficient computer skills, customer service skills, communication skills, and organizational skills are equally important.
Hazards are minimal as long as safety protocols are followed, though this may vary based on the industry and specific projects. Physical requirements are limited to common activities such as standing or sitting, but some employers may also have requirements for lifting or other activities. Work hours vary greatly, many different shifts are available, and work sites can vary from laboratories and warehouses to common office locations.
