They are responsible for meeting any customers' needs and attending to any outstanding requests the waiter or waitress is not able to attend to promptly. They are often given small tasks to routinely complete, such as the maintenance and cleanliness of menus, menu distribution, and preparation and distribution of silverware and napkins to customers.
Restaurant hosts and hostesses are expected to acknowledge customers warmly and thank them upon their departure. Additional tasks may include taking to-go orders from phone or walk-in customers and basic cleaning tasks such as sweeping the entry of the restaurant and ensuring the cleanliness of the restroom facilities at a regular interval.
