A retail shop supervisor works in a store that sells merchandise directly to customers and is responsible for overseeing employees to make sure all operations are running smoothly. This supervisor may also have hiring duties and need to carry out disciplinary actions as needed.
Retail shop supervisors should continuously motivate employees to provide the best customer service possible. If customers express dissatisfaction with their service, the supervisor should determine the cause and and propose an effective solution. When employees carry out superb service, this should also be recognized through programs such as "employee of the month" or simply through praise. These supervisors must make sure all employees are up-to-date in the training they need, and it may also be his/her duty to administer training directly, so public speaking skills are highly beneficial.
The supervisor may be in charge of arranging the store so it looks attractive. When working for a franchise, he/she must make sure that the design adheres to company ideas and policies. They may also be involved in marketing efforts, such as creating special sales or displays to entice customers, and may help out with regular duties in the store, such as working directly with customers or tidying up the store. The supervisor will also be in charge of inventory and ordering stock when it is low. Usually, a minimum of a high school is necessary, along with years of experience in the retail field.
