Roustabouts work with the equipment used in oil production processes, which includes manufacturing amine and glycol-skipped equipment, and are essential to the operations of oil companies. They also assist both senior and low-level employees with construction activities, pipe-fitting, and manufacturing needed equipment; this includes assisting in the fabrication of piping and structural steel and building amine units. Specifically, welders and pipe-fitters require support from roustabouts on a regular basis.
Roustabouts are also responsible for the maintenance, movement, transfer, and repair of equipment. They may also assist in the maintenance of facilities (mopping, sweeping, general cleaning, etc.).
Good communication skills are very important in this position, as roustabouts are responsible for understanding and relating to staff and senior-level employees regarding problems with equipment. A high school diploma and prior production experience in the oil industry are generally required for this position, as is an H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) certification; those with forklift operation experience may also be preferred. Candidates must be able to lift 75 lbs. and be reliable, ethical, and conscious of all safety considerations, and maintain a positive attitude in demanding circumstances. Multitasking is also important, as roustabouts often work on multiple projects simultaneously. Some positions may occasionally require overtime with little notice, so candidates with this flexibility may also be preferred.
Monitor, maintain and repair production equipment.
Operate hand and power tools to set up oil rigs, wellheads, lines, pumps and other equipment.
Ensure safe operation of equipment that adheres to company and government regulations.
