These safety directors may conduct audits to ensure that employees are adhering to given rules, as well as train new drivers, provide follow-up training, and issue certificates. They must ensure that all licenses, qualifications, and certifications among employees are current and valid, and they may also process and organize paperwork including forms, records, and other files. Some may administer safety training, so teaching and public speaking skills are beneficial in this position, and they may also create safety protocols and investigate accidents to determine what actions should be taken.
Broad knowledge of DOT regulations and other applicable laws is important for transportation/shipping safety directors, and a valid driver's license and CPR/first aid certification may also be required. Strong computer skills are necessary for communication, record-keeping, and similar tasks, and a high school diploma and many years of relevant experience are also required.
