The automotive sales consultant is responsible for helping automobile buyers discover which vehicles best fit their needs within their price range. The consultant welcomes the prospective buyer to the lot and engages them in friendly conversation to determine the buyer's needs and interests. Whether the buyer is just browsing or they have an idea of what they want, the automotive sales consultant helps them by showing the available cars, explaining their features, answering any questions the buyer may have, and helping them come to a decision. As with any sales job, an automotive sales consultant must be an open, personable and persuasive individual who can gain the customer's trust and make them feel comfortable about the big decision they may be making. They should ideally have a thorough understanding of automotives in general as well as specific models to be able to answer questions and offer recommendations. Sales consultants are often on their feet for long hours and are on the move constantly across lots, making a certain level of physical fitness necessary.
There are no specific postsecondary education requirements for most automotive sales consultant positions. Employers typically look for sales experience in applicants, especially experience relevant to the automotive industry. Dealerships which specialize in luxury or specialty vehicles may have additional specific requirements.
