Sales managers in the hotel and hospitality industries are required to generate revenue by attracting customers from around the world to stay at their hotels as paying guests. They are responsible for many aspects of marketing, both locally and internationally, and will work with various marketing agencies to promote their hotels. They also oversees sales department staff and delegate various responsibilities in order for all operations to run smoothly.
This type of position usually requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Hospitality Administration and Management or a related field, as well as prior experience in the industry. These sales managers are responsible for developing new ways to attract guests and make their stays as enjoyable as possible; they cannot afford to have negative comments or reviews on the internet. The sales managers and/or their staff must respond promptly to such complaints either in-person or via e-mail. They also meet frequently with customer service managers, as these two departments are of particular importance to businesses in this industry.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are required, and the ability to execute tasks in accordance to strict priorities is very important. The hospitality business can be quite competitive, so the ability to handle stress in a high-pressure environment is also a must. These managers are often required to travel to attend seminars, train, and obtain prospects. They may have to meet people from travel agencies or organizations which hold conferences at hotels, so flexibility is required.
