A retail sales team leader holds a supervisory position directing the sales team in a retail environment. It is their job to help implement a company’s sales strategy and ensure that the rest of the sales team adheres to these guidelines. The team leader may be asked to help establish new strategies or contribute to existing systems; they then work to help implement and train the staff on executing sales techniques and services within this framework. Retail sales team leaders supervise the staff and review sales data to ensure that the entire team performs to expectations. The team leader may also be used to assist with scheduling, especially in organizations where this position is recognized as a formal part of the management team. The team leader must base schedules on expected business flow, while monitoring costs.
A big part of the team leader’s job is training new employees on the sales team. This involves teaching a company’s sales methodology, as well as testing new hires on their understanding of those techniques. As an adjunct to this process, the sales team leader normally evaluates members of their team and work with them as needed to improve performance.
Finally, the sales team leader is responsible for the presentation of the retail environment to the buying public. Proper standards of facilities maintenance and cleanliness, inventory presentation, and sales material display use falls to the retail team leader.
Persons with this position can expect to work normal retail hours, although if the position is a key-holder one, they may work slightly before or after the store opens and closes to help set up or close shop as needed.
Typically experience as a leader in a retail setting is required for this role. Excellent leadership and communication skills are also required.
