Salespeople are employed to sell products to customers. While the details of their work depend heavily on the size of the employer, its industry, and its management style, in all cases the main objective is to maximize products sold and achieve high customer satisfaction.
Salespeople work with all types of goods and services. In some small retail roles, salespeople may only interact with customers, display good product knowledge, and offer advice if necessary, while in larger positions they may take many active roles, including maintaining customer relationships and a customer database, generating leads, preparing sales and action strategies, developing client referrals, preparing sales contracts, conducting product training, and ensuring smooth sales processes at all times.
Salespeople work in a variety of positions, hours, and settings. Most organizations require full-time working weeks in an office setting, while other positions may require many hours out of the office to travel, meet clients, or attend product training. Some salespeople work almost exclusively from an office and spend most of their time on a client's premises or in-transit. Flexibility in hours is often required for this position, including the ability to make and take calls during nights and weekends.
Formal education requirements are not always strict for salespeople; however, some employers prefer a minimum of a high school diploma and some prior experience in sales. Experience, knowledge, and customer service skills are generally held in higher regard than education in sales roles.
