The screw machine operator will set up the screw machine. This job will require good physical strength and endurance in order to stand for prolonged periods of time, to bend and stoop, and to lift heavy items. Good manual dexterity is required in this job. Multitasking skills will come in handy, as the screw machine operator may have to oversee the operation of several machines and will have to perform several tasks at once. The ability to read blueprints is often a requirement of the job. The screw machine operator should be able to manipulate the workings of the machine, so that machine speeds, cutting depths, and cutting speeds can be adjusted as needed. Troubleshooting skills and the ability to make small repairs will come in handy. The machine and the area in which work is carried out will often be noisy, so it is important to be able to work in this kind of situation. Independence and the ability to adhere to deadlines are important.
Usually, a high school diploma is required. The operator will also have to install and adjust various mechanical parts of the machine as needed. Some jobs are entry-level apprenticeship jobs, while others will require some experience with a screw machine.
