Senior Estimator Advice

What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Senior Estimator in Boise:
"Construction Estimating."
High pressure and low success rate. You need thick skin and an indomitable attitude. Lots of people used to be estimators. Ups and downs, but mostly down.

Senior Estimator in San Diego:
"Systems and procedures are key."
If you want to produce accurate bids, you need systems and checks in place to make sure that you have captured all of the relevant costs, as well as ensure that you have the information you need when you need it.

Senior Estimator in Hartford:
"All work and no play."
Put in the " due diligence" to be sure the costs for labor and material are accurate to maintain margins.

Senior Estimator in Minneapolis:
"Boring."
I would not want anyone to go into this as you do not get out to sites to see what you are bidding.

Senior Estimator in Aurora:
"Get it in writing!"
The short version is...promises were made that I asked to have in writing. I accepted the job prior to that written promise and now in two years, my boss who made the promises is gone. I have had no review, no raise, no bonus and no way of knowing how one has the opportunity to achieve anything at this company. I have gone all the way up to the President and still have no answers. GET IT IN WRITING!
