In some positions, the senior industrial engineer will develop new product designs and modifications to current designs, which includes brainstorming new ways to carry out production of goods. Some companies will take input from customers to create custom designs, in which case the engineer will bring these plans to life. It is important that a senior industrial engineer stays up-to-date with field developments and keep an eye on competitors to stay one step ahead.
Generally, product design is carried out with 3D CAD software. A budget may be administered, in which case the best possible design will need to be created within those constraints. A bachelor’s degree or higher is generally required of candidates; since it is a senior position which may involve leadership duties, past leadership skills may need to be shown. Much of the work of senior industrial engineers is done in an office setting, though there is also a substantial amount of surveying carried out in the field.
