As a senior principal architect, this person fulfills an upper-level executive job and may not provide much hands-on design work, typically delegating this work to front-line project managers within the firm. The senior principal architect will, however, require regular status reports and in-progress drawings and schematics. He or she may offer suggestions and ideas to the middle managers to help keep the design work on deadline. This person may even assign more staff architects to a project if he or she feels it will be necessary to hit target dates for completion.
Normally a senior principal architect is promoted internally through a firm after establishing a career within that company. Other firms will hire for this position from outside the company. However, these firms typically will prefer candidates who hold similar positions at existing design establishments. A senior principal architect will also hold proper architectural certifications and will typically have a degree in this discipline from a university. Most senior principal architects work in an office environment during extended hours of the business week.
