Generally, those in this position are only hands-on regarding highest level of questions relating to regulation or legal issues which affect the organization. The senior staff counsel members may be responsible for directing mid-level members of their department toward areas of concern, and may also have hiring, promotion, and budgeting responsibilities within their department. They typically report to the executive board regarding the progress or disposition of internal and external problems related to regulation or general legal matters. If action is required by the board, the senior staff counsel presents options in written and oral communication and also provide recommendations.
These senior staff members are always available for their companies' executives to answer policy/procedure questions and ensure that their operations fall within established regulatory parameters. They may occasionally be called upon to represent their companies in civil proceedings and help negotiate company-friendly resolutions; they do not always defend in this part of the job, but may also initiate proceedings in cases such as patent infringement or copyright protection on behalf of their organizations' interests.
Most employers of this position prefer candidates who have demonstrated past success and extensive practical experience in corporate/business law. Because the senior staff counsel may be a member of the board, it is not unusual for companies to promote from within for this position. A law degree and bar accreditation are required for this position, and candidates should also have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
