Senior Systems Engineer (Computer Networking / IT) Salary

Senior systems engineers (computer networking/IT) are generally responsible for managing and maintaining computer systems and tools; finding and fixing issues within systems; and implementing, monitoring, and building tools that automate repetitive tasks to minimize errors and prevent downtime. They develop automation frameworks using tools such as Chef and Puppet, and they generally must be familiar with version control systems such as git, relational databases like Oracle or MySQL, web servers (Apache and NGINX), and CMS applications (Drupal or Wordpress). Knowledge of Linux and/or Solaris is necessary. They must also be proficient in at least one programming language such as Ruby, Python, Perl, or PHP. They must be able to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and must be comfortable at a command line using vi.
In general, senior systems engineers must be able to work within a team environment, have strong time management skills and communication skills, be highly focused and disciplined, and be willing to take ownership of and execute deliverables on a timely schedule. Senior systems engineers work in an office environment, seated at a desk, in front of a computer; they typically work during regular business hours, although many senior systems engineers participate in an on-call rotation to provide 24/7 support to troubleshoot problems such as outages or needed fixes. They generally work with other senior systems engineers and may supervise or manage junior systems engineers. They generally report to a department manager or director. Most senior systems engineers have a bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering, or have equivalent experience in the field. They are employed by all facets of industry and typically work with business owners and application developers.
