The main function of a slaughterer is to prepare choice and premium meat by cutting, chopping, and slicing to prepare for purchase and consumption. They are also responsible for wrapping meat after it has been chopped and even rolling it into sausage links and other products. Slaughterers and meat-packers must be able to handle a variety of tasks. The work is very physically demanding and requires material-handling, bending, climbing, and even knife-wielding. They are also responsible for operating machinery to process the meat they have sliced.
Those in this position must have good social and communication skills with incoming consumers in order to answer any questions they may have. Of course, the job requires a certain level of skill, and slaughterers must also be well-educated in the anatomy of the animals with which they work. They must also be in compliance with all safety laws and regulations passed by the FDA at all times.
