These operators maintain or operate machines that are manufactured to modify metals, plastics, or other materials, and must have extensive knowledge of the materials they work with in case a tool must be adjusted to modify a material. They typically work under the direct supervision of a group leader and plant product manager to determine which machines will be used by which workers, and they are expected to be cross-trained to successfully operate any type of machine. They must also have an understanding of machine repairs and basic preventive maintenance tasks, and communication skills and the ability to assist in the training of other operators are highly beneficial in this position.
A high school diploma is often a minimum requirement for this position, and some employers may also require an associate's degree in the training field in which they will work. These operators are expected to take instructions well and enter data of their production into a computer database, and they should also be able to stand on their feet for twelve-hour shifts and lift at least least 50 lbs. throughout their shifts.
