Some of the main responsibilities of these analysts include gathering business requirements for programming specific features into database applications, identifying technology needs, and coordinating with other database specialists to test programs before implementation. Those in this position work closely with quality assurance teams to identify software issues, propose solutions to bugs, and test changes. In addition, they actively participate in business meetings to suggest changes to the analysis and software processes and offer ideas to make databases consume fewer company resources.
These analysts must work well in a team environment with other analysts and developers, but should also perform effectively on their own with minimal supervision. They generally use a personal computer loaded with programming tools and database software to create applications that meet the specifications of company projects. Those in this position should also be proficient with office applications for spreadsheets, database consulting, and creating queries to find important information. They also create technical manuals and write reports for upper-management professionals and end users for future reference.
They may help mentor and train novice users in new software programs, and generally report their progress to the database vice president or systems supervisor in their department. A bachelor's degree in database applications, business analysis, or a related field is required for this position. Previous years of experience in an analyst or developer capacity can be helpful, and industry and technology certifications are also beneficial.
