There is quite a lot that must be learned to become a successful solar installation technician, but most important is the nation electrical code (also known as the NEC or NFPA 70), which is the standard for safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment. They must also have an understanding of wire and conduit sizing and the ability to spot safety hazards and faulty equipment. There is a variety of tools with which these electricians must be proficient, including screwdrivers, diagonal cutters, pitch finders, compasses, irradiance measuring tools, and more.
A solar installation electrician must be able to work quickly, efficiently, and independently. They may have several jobs lined-up to complete, and therefore must be aware of the time spent on each installation. It is important for them to be able to push, pull, and lift heavy objects, and be comfortable with ladders and high places. A valid driver's license is required, as they must have reliable transportation to their job site.
Becoming a solar installation technician does not necessarily require experience in solar installation; many companies require a strong background as an electrician. This generally involves acquiring a certified electrician's license or a NABCEP certification.
