In terms of sales, these vice presidents have the final responsibility for determining the best manner to sell their company's products and/or services. They must ensure that the company remains competitive in its field. They are also in charge of the sales budget, both in terms of formulation and management. If the company has any important client contracts, senior vice presidents of sales and marketing may focus special attention on those accounts.
In terms of marketing, senior vice presidents of sales and marketing oversee the ways in which the company spreads information pertaining to its products and/or services. Knowledge of competitors in the field is essential, as marketing efforts are usually aimed at highlighting the benefits of the company versus its competitors. Marketing tasks include analysis of trends in the market, formulation of new advertising and promotion methods, and monitoring existing marketing efforts.
Vice presidents of sales and marketing must be excellent communicators and leaders. They must be professional, confident, and effective at solving sales and marketing issues within their company. Many vice presidents of sales and marketing work are promoted into the position through a good track record supervising sales, advertising, and/or marketing efforts. They usually have at least a bachelor’s degree, and often a master’s degree, in a related field.
