Say what you want
Staff Accountant - (City withheld for privacy), Maryland, United States
One of my old employers once told me that you should always tell your boss what you want. This seems like a very straight forward concept, but most people do not do this. I have tried to establish the habbit of always telling my boss where I want to be in 5 years as well as in say 10 years. I tell my boss that I want to have his position in 5 years. This has helped me greatly. I have had conversations with him and I am supprised at the things he tells me about others who have not stated their career goals.

Get what you want on demand
Staff Accountant - (City withheld for privacy), California, United States
Let your boss know what it is that you want. Provide them with all necessary support to reasoning why it is you deserve what your asking for. (i.e. PayScale printout, description of tasks, etc.)

Once you boss replies with, "yes you can have an increase" then great. Job well done. Otherwise, if your boss refuses then you'll have to resort to other alternatives like applying for other jobs.

Internet use at work
Staff Accountant - (City withheld for privacy), New Jersey, United States
I was working at a temporary job at a large company. There was no work for us for several hours and we were told we could surf the web while we were without work to do. I asked if I could check my email and was trold yes. Well, there were dating services on my e-mail and I was using them at work. The next week, I was told not to come back to work because of my internet use. A month later, I was hired by a different company. I told my manager why I got fired from my last job and at the end of the day I was told not to come back to work. I was fired again. All for simply using the internet. What a drag.
