Staff assistants perform administrative and clerical work in office environments for commercial companies, non-profit organizations, and government entities. Strong customer service skills are important in this position, as staff assistants may greet visitors as they enter the facility. The ability to communicate well in both written and verbal communication is also necessary.
In-depth knowledge of what the company offers is important to be able to answer general questions and provide referrals as needed. These assistants perform tasks such as answering telephones, completing data entry, sorting mail, and carrying out correspondence, and there may be additional duties depending on the employer and field of employment. Staff assistants may work with particular employees or groups, and computer skills are also important in this position. They should be able to use word processing and spreadsheet software, and in some positions they may assist in marketing, outreach and follow-up communication efforts.
Some staff assistants may have duties relating to finances, such as creating expense reports, processing invoices and orders, and summarizing other data. It is important to be able to communicate with other employees in a professional and coherent manner, as well as to work independently and adhere to all deadlines. A high school diploma is usually a minimum requirement for this position, and some positions may require an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. There are both entry-level positions and those which require significant experience.
