Storage engineers who work with information storage tend to work in an office setting. Both types of storage engineer tend to work 40-hour weeks. Storage engineers working with computer space work with computers, computer software, telephones, pens and paper, and other office supplies. Those working with physical storage may use those same office supplies, but they also use physical tools, primarily a tape measure. The working hours are typical business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, those who work with computer storage space may work in the evening or over the weekend if there is a problem in the computer system. Regardless of which type of storage the engineer is working with, his or she is often the only person on staff in his or her position. The storage engineer may report to a number of different workers, including a plant manager, operations manager, director of information technology, or general manager.
There are also different requirements for a storage engineer depending on which type of storage they work with. Those working with physical storage must have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. Those working with computer storage must have a bachelor's degree in computer science or information science. Both are typically positions to which one is promoted, so they must also have experience in their respective fields.
