Supplier diversity directors generally work for large companies and are responsible for programs which support the diverse businesses which supply their companies with goods or services. Excellent managerial and leadership skills are important in this position, as they must provide guidance and leadership on matters related to supplier diversity throughout their organizations. They also serve a liaison function between their company and diverse supplier advocacy groups and provide information and presentations to these groups and other interested parties. Aspiring supplier diversity directors should have a college degree in business, finance, marketing, or a related field, and some employers may prefer those who have master's degrees. Some employers also require that these directors have commensurate work experience; however, qualified employees from within a company may be promoted to this position.
Supplier diversity directors must ensure that their companies include qualified and diverse suppliers, such as qualified minority businesses, women-owned businesses, veteran-owned businesses, LGBT-owned businesses, and many others. They must not discriminate in hiring their suppliers and should consider them objectively based on quality, competitiveness, cost, safety, turnaround time, lead time, etc. They must always stay up-to-date with government rules and regulations related to supplier diversity programs, and should also work closely with their legal departments.
