The position of a support group manager requires an effective leader who can manage a group of professionals and properly allocate time and group resources. Generally, support group managers assemble and/or manage a team of individuals and incorporate their efforts into greater overall projects.
Those in this position generally break down larger assignments into daily and weekly tasks for individuals and must manage these workers efficiently, which includes writing staff performance reviews. A support group manager is expected to maintain regular communication and coordination with group members, as well as other employees within the organization, to ensure productivity and present group progress reports to project managers. Participation in planning and strategy meetings with other managers is required, and these meetings will include sharing techniques to improve quality and efficiency and ensuring that project goals are met.
Throughout all stages of a project, support group managers are expected to assess its needs constantly and adjust the team's goals to meet those needs. Desired qualifications, though they are not strict requirements, include a bachelor's degree in business and/or management, experience in leading groups of individuals in various projects, basic computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft office programs, self-motivation with strong organizational skills, and the ability to multitask efficiently while staying adaptive and flexible. Support group managers typically work in indoor office environments for 40 to 50 hours per week, though work-days generally start early in the morning and end mid- to late-afternoon.
