Job Description for Surgical Nurse

Surgical nurses provide care before, during and after surgery, including assisting the surgeon(s) during procedures. They help create and implement a plan for both the care and recovery of patients post-surgery, as well as help prepare patients for surgery and communicate with physicians - including surgeons - during perioperative care. Tasks performed during surgical procedures include handing instruments to the surgeon, providing suction and checking patients' vital signs to ensure they remain stable, among others. After surgery, they must monitor patients for any complications from surgery and quickly take action if complications arise.
