Job Description for Surgical Nurse
Surgical nurses provide care before, during and after surgery, including assisting the surgeon(s) during procedures. They help create and implement a plan for both the care and recovery of patients post-surgery, as well as help prepare patients for surgery and communicate with physicians - including surgeons - during perioperative care. Tasks performed during surgical procedures include handing instruments to the surgeon, providing suction and checking patients' vital signs to ensure they remain stable, among others. Additionally, surgical nurses perform tasks common among many types of nurses, such as administering IV fluids, making rounds to check patients' status and administering medication. The surgical nurse usually works in a team with other nurses and reports to a head nurse. They generally work in a healthcare facility where surgery is performed, such as a hospital.
A surgical nurse must be a registered nurse in the state that they work, which requires obtaining postsecondary nursing education and passing a national licensing examination. Additional relevant certifications and experience in intensive care units or recovery rooms may be required or preferred as well. The employer may have a training program that the surgical nurse is required to attend as well.
