They must have a positive attitude and pay close attention to detail in order to effectively create artful tattoos or properly apply body piercings, and strong communication skills are also important to fully understand clients' wishes and desires and ensure that they are fulfilled. For this reason, some employers may prefer applicants who can speak more than one language fluently.
Successful tattoos and body piercers should have creative flair as well as artistic talent, and must have precision and very steady hands to create consistent and accurate drawings. Tools to complete tattoos and body piercings are typically purchased by the artist or his/her employer, and sterilizing kits are also required. Tattoo artists and body piercers may work up to six days per week in part-time or full-time shifts, as hours can vary greatly by employer and geographic area. Individual tattoo sessions may last up to three hours or more, and extreme concentration is required due to the permanent nature of this business.
