Most technical artists work in the video game industry and are tasked with serving as liaisons between computer programmers (or software engineers) and artists working on video games. Technical artists work to combine artistic vision with technology and are responsible for maintaining workflow and following up on project deadlines, and they may also decide which tools, art packages, software, and applications will be used in their studios.
Technical artists should be able to work with minimal or no supervision as well as in a team environment, and communication and interpersonal skills are important in this position. Creativity and innovation are important to resolve technical challenges on a regular basis, and they must also be able to use 3D graphic software and similar programs.
A college degree or technical school training in graphic design is generally required for this position, and aspiring technical artists should be able to use tools such as Mel and Python. Some may take ongoing education classes to keep their skills up-to-date, and more experienced technical artists may train new or younger artists.
