Technical delivery managers are a type of customer-relations manager specific to the information technology (IT) industry. They are employed, (sometimes on a contract basis and sometimes as full-time employees) to lead large-scale IT implementation projects. This work is largely mental, requiring great knowledge of IT infrastructure, excellent planning skills, and deep understanding of the specific solution being offered by the company for which they are working.
Technical delivery managers generally work standard 40-hour, first shift weeks, though some overtime or time outside of business hours may be required, depending on the project in question. They must have strong skills in both planning and leadership, as well as the ability to coordinate many people and tasks simultaneously. They are generally responsible for everything from the initial planning and requirements gathering phases until the final workstation is implemented and all users are trained. While they may or may not have many hands-on roles in setting up solutions, they are responsible for the end result of the workers they coordinate.
Because this is such a high-level role with such a great amount of responsibility, technical delivery managers are usually required to not only have a relevant educational background (generally consisting of a bachelor’s degree in an IT-related field), but also many additional certifications and several years’ experience working on IT project management teams. The specific certifications will vary by company, though MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Expert), ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library), and PMP (Project Management Professional) certifications are among the most common.
