Job Description for Telecommunications Line Installer / Repairer
A telecommunications line installer and repairer installs telecommunications lines for internet and phone services and ensures that they work optimally. When issues are detected or reported by the customers, the line installer will inspect the lines to remedy the issues. Some things that are installed are fiberoptic wiring, drop wires, network grid devices, multiline systems, private branch exchanges, and protectors for the lines. When new customers order services, the installer will create new lines and make sure that customers can receive the service. When problems are reported, a line installer will have to troubleshoot the issues in order to determine the problem. Much of the work of a telecommunications line installer is done outdoors, so this individual should not be sensitive to harsh weather conditions. Climbing poles may sometimes be required in order to install and repair lines, and the ability to lift heavy equipment is often needed. Some installers might also have duties fixing customer equipment. The line installer will have to keep up-to-date with new developments in technology and will often have to take training courses.
This job generally requires schooling in the maintenance field and may require prior experience with line installations. The maintenance installer should be able to interpret things such as grid maps and operating manuals in order to troubleshoot issues. A valid driver’s license is usually needed, as travel to customers’ houses is an important part of the job.
