Those in this position must have expert supervisory skills to oversee multiple groups of employees and ensure a seamless theater experience. After the theater closes, the manager will ensure it is clean, safe, and ready for the following night's performance; this may include changing advertisements, ordering concessions, and ensuring that security measures are in place.
These managers are also responsible for signing acts to be performed and maintaining a sound budget to maintain profitability. They often oversee advertising and promotions, as well as monitor ticket sales and attendance of each showing.
A four-year degree in business management, marketing, or a related field is generally required for this position. Long shifts should be expected, though they are not necessarily common.
Theater Manager Tasks
- Mentor and oversee all departments to insure that the theater is in compliance with all terms of its agreements.
- Manage relationships with artist unions, including AEA, USA, SDC and other appropriate associations.
- Work with the Director of Production, Producer and Line Producers to prepare, supervise and manage annual production budgets while maintaining strict financial discipline.
- Negotiate and create appropriate contracts to engage all production personnel.
- Work with the Artistic, Production and Facilities departments in coordinating the yearly calendar of activities, maximizing the efficiency of operations.
