Job Description for Travel Agent

A travel agent is an individual who works to assist clients in finding and creating the best travel plans. It is his or her job to take the stress away from people who are trying to plan a vacation, business trip, etc. He or she must be able to work well with all different kinds of people, ranging from those who are rich to those who are on a tight budget. A travel agent works indoors and must always have access to a computer. He or she may work with other travel agents or work alone. A travel agent may also work at a solo company or for a travel agency. As such, he or she must be capable of working in a professional manner not only with clients, but also with fellow co-workers, assistants, and other staff.
The job of a travel agent has no physical demands, but it can be very mentally taxing. A travel agent must be able to put together itineraries, schedules, flight plans, hotel reservations, activity lists, and any other necessary travel information for a variety of locales and for different lengths of time. He or she must be comfortable working with websites that assist in booking flights and reservations as well as working directly with airlines, hotel staff, etc., in order to ensure that everything is taken care of for the client. While no certifications are required, high school and college are strongly recommended. The hours of a travel agent can vary but typically range from mid morning through the evening.
Travel Agent Tasks
  • Build rapport with individual customers to secure new clients and maintain a consistent customer base.
  • Provide counseling and support for customer requests, and review documents for accuracy.
  • Respond to incoming requests and conduct research on travel planning and itinerary customization.
  • Draft service contracts for group travel.
