Approximately three in five of Travel Consultants in the United States are seasoned employees who have more than 10 years of experience in the field. Pay ranges from $24K to $52K per year, and the average comes out to $36K annually. Residence is the biggest factor affecting pay for this group, followed by experience level. Women account for the majority of Travel Consultants who took the survey — 85 percent to be exact. Health benefits are not claimed by all — approximately one in four lack any form of coverage — but a strong majority have medical insurance, and the greater part have dental, too.   • Maintain client loyalty program accounts and ensure proper point redemption procedures are followed.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients to create convenient and affordable travel plans.

Most Travel Consultants do not go on to assume a Corporate Travel Consultant role (where median pay is $42K) but some have been known to make the move. Becoming a Travel Agent or a Travel Counselor is, however, a more typical career progression for Travel Consultants.

Travel Consultants who responded to the survey indicated only a few skills that they use on the job. Travel Planning and Customer Service are considered valuable skills and can increase employee pay by 3 percent and 3 percent, respectively. It is not unusual for someone who knows Customer Service to be familiar with Travel Planning as well.

In contrast, however, individuals who report five to 10 years in this occupation see a much larger median of $35K. Travel Consultants bring in $38K after working for 10 to 20 years. Folks who have racked up more than 20 years in the field report incomes that aren't that much higher than less experienced individuals' earnings; the veterans make just $42K on average.
