Job Description for Truss Designer
A truss designer designs and creates layouts for roofs and floors for consumers, and generally works with architects and engineers to discuss whether new designs are feasible. Some positions will involve developing standard designs that can be sold to customers, while others involve interacting directly with customers to determine their needs and create custom designs. They may also be responsible for purchasing needed materials for projects.Read More...
Sales skills are often needed for this position to encourage customers to purchase items, and truss designers may also work with a marketing team to devise marketing plans. Commission may be offered, and there may be minimum sales goals to be reached. Customers may come naturally to these designers in some jobs, while other jobs will require them to follow leads to find customers. There may be minimum physical requirements due to some interaction with heavy building materials, though the majority of the work occurs in an office environment. Traveling to job sites may be required, so a valid driver’s license is often necessary.
Some jobs require a minimum of a high school diploma, though others will require further schooling. Most positions require experience with CAD design and/or architectural design and proficiency in other computer applications, such as Microsoft Office products. Hours vary, and some designers may occasionally need to work on weekends.
