Job Description for United States Postal Worker (Mail Handler)

The United States Postal Service is a federal agency that provides postal service throughout the U.S. United States postal workers (mail handlers) perform a number of functions related to ensuring that letters, packages, postcards and other pieces of mail are handled properly and delivered to the correct destination. Mail handlers often work at mail processing centers and larger post offices, and they perform duties such as unloading, sorting and packing mail so that it can be delivered to other processing centers or post offices. Specific duties performed by mail handlers include placing empty mail sacks on racks, removing mail from sacks, rewrapping damaged packages and putting mail that has been processed into the appropriate sacks. They also cancel stamps for items sent through parcel post, as well as run the canceling machines and transport mail from the canceling machines to distribution areas. Mail handlers may need to operate forklifts and inspect equipment to ensure it is functioning properly as well.
