Vice presidents of student services focus primarily on maintaining a high quality of life for students on campus and ensure that on-campus services are successful; these can include extracurricular experiences as well as general campus life services. These vice presidents must lead by working with staff to build on past success and improve services for the future. Much of the work is collaborative and involves a variety of groups, so leadership, wisdom, empathy, and diplomacy are essential to succeed in this position.
Different schools will have different requirements for this position. Education in a related field is always preferable, and some schools even prefer a doctorate degree. Schools also focus on candidates' histories in student affairs; it is important that candidates have worked with students' concerns in the past and successfully resolved them while maintaining a level of academic integrity.
Support services for students on campus are important to student life, and the vice president will lead these services and administer policies and procedures, including resolution of non-academic misconduct, on-campus support responding to a student’s death, and campus culture regarding bullying, drug and alcohol use, and protecting sexual integrity.
