Job Description for Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor
A vocational rehabilitation counselor is a counselor who specializes in providing services to disabled persons in order to rehabilitate these individuals for employment. This rehabilitation can be mental, physical, and psychological, depending on the client’s needs. This person will generally keep traditional daytime office hours. This person will generally need to acquire a bachelor’s degree in a field related to rehabilitative sciences, sociology, or behavioral sciences. Some organizations requiring a master’s degree. Additional certifications or skills may also be required, in addition to experience within the field.
A vocational rehabilitation counselor’s job duties will vary depending on their clients. Overall, this person is focused on rehabilitating their client in order to get them back to work. Some typical responsibilities will include coordinating various rehabilitations services, establishing and implementing a plan for rehabilitation, evaluating each client, performing general case documentation and case management, performing tests (physical, mental and psychological), assessing and interpreting data regarding tests, collaborating with employment resource placement, providing individual and group counseling sessions with clients, and providing overall support for each client. This person should be somebody who is innately optimistic and positive and has the ability to convey this attitude to their clients. A vocational rehabilitation counselor should act as the clients’ biggest cheerleader and must possess expert communication skills with clients and employers.
