A youth minister usually works with preteens and teenagers in a church or other religious environment, in order to deepen their spiritual development. Working with youth involves a great deal of creativity, in order to grab the attention of young people. It may be necessary to plan lessons and create goals for the youth. The youth minister will often lead other employees and volunteers, so management and leadership skills of adults are also important. Since this position involves working in a religious environment, working weekends is usually a part of the job. Services and other activities are often offered at night, so hours may vary widely. Planning of activities and sermons must be done well in advance, and this may be expected to be done during off hours. A strong knowledge of the Bible and the meaning behind it is essential for this job. Some of the youth may be troubled, so individual counseling may sometimes be necessary. The youth minister may also work with and counsel parents and other caregivers. A great deal of patience is required in order to work well with a group of youth.
This job often requires university schooling in theology, though some positions will hire an individual who has a lot of experience in the field. Past experience in the field often has to be demonstrated.
