Among ASU grads, the marketing, advertising, and media management industry is a commonly chosen career field. Unfortunately, former ASU students — a population with excellent SAT results — report salaries on the lower end of the pay scale. The average starting salary for a graduate of ASU is around $43K.


Many ASU alumni seem to stick around Montgomery after wrapping up their studies; nearly one in seven grads remain to find permanent work. ASU alumni seeking the highest salaries end up in Montgomery, Ala., which offers a median salary of about $57K. On the other end, ASU grads flock to Atlanta, Ga., which actually offers the weakest median salary of approximately $44K. Graduates of ASU also relocate to Birmingham, Ala., which is not far away, and Memphis, Tenn.

Degree Major

With a median annual earnings of $60K per year, former Hornets who have a B.A. in Communication are the best paid among the alumni population. Graduates holding a Bachelor of Science in Business & Marketing fare the worst in terms of compensation with an average yearly salary of $44K.


Customer Service is a common skill among ASU alumni — close to a fourth of grads mention using it at work. Project Management commands a pay premium of 98 percent for former Hornets. In addition, those who are savvy in Microsoft Excel, Office Administration, and Microsoft Word are also considered highly skilled.

Benefits and Perks

Slightly more than half of the survey participants are allowed to take paid time off for vacation, but only about one-fourth of alumni get paid sick leave. A strong majority of respondents save up for retirement through a 401(k) plan. Dental insurance applies to a fair number of respondents, and a strong majority of former students report health coverage. Other benefits that Alabama State University alumni receive are life insurance, tuition reimbursement, a company-subsidized cell phone, and 401(a).
