American alumni can most commonly be found in the consulting industry, the government industry, and the international affairs industry, though they are employed throughout a wide range of sectors. The majority of alumni accept jobs in the education industry. Following graduation, American students earn an average of about $64K.


After graduation, disparities in salary rise to the surface — males earn an average $73K per year compared to females' $60K.


The most lucrative professionals among American alumni are Intelligence Analysts and Attorneys; they earn a median annual salary of $82K. Non-Profit Executive Directors aren't slouches either, bringing in around $81K. Research Analysts face rather mediocre compensation — average salaries are actually the lowest at $50K.


The most popular destination for former American students is New York, N.Y. Los Angeles, Calif. is another hot spot for American grads, where salaries rank at the top of the pay scale (compensation averages out to approximately $128K). American alumni in Washington, DC can often be found sliding in at the lower end of the pay scale, where median paychecks are the smallest at about $62K. San Francisco, Calif. is also a top pick, as is Fairfax, Va.

Degree Major

Financial compensation is highest for American grads with a Master of Science (MS), Organizational Development (average earnings climb to $185K per year). A Bachelor's Degree, International Relations is less advantageous in terms of earnings; alums with this degree are the lowest earners with a median annual pay of $39K.


Former Eagles who have experience with Media / Public Relations can expect to make 30 percent more than other alumni ($83K on average). American grads are usually competent in Project Management, and just under one in five alumni continue practicing this skill in their career. Demonstrated ability in Data Analysis, Marketing Communications, and Social Media Marketing rank among leading skills as well.

Benefits and Perks

Just one-third of alumni enjoy paid vacation and merely one-third of alumni get paid sick time. A large number of survey participants allocate some part of their earnings to a company-sponsored 401(k) savings plan. Dental insurance applies to a strong majority of respondents, and most grads report health coverage. Additional perks enjoyed by American University grads include life insurance, a casual working environment, a company-subsidized cell phone, and tuition reimbursement.
