Among ETSU grads, the health care industry is a commonly chosen career field. ETSU grads who become Software Engineers garner financial rewards beyond any other job type for this group — these alumni rake in an average around $95K annually. However, IT Business Analysts and Systems Analysts also rank as top-earners (bringing in about $68K and approximately $64K, respectively). Directors of Operations get the short end of the stick when it comes to salary; grads report making an average of $47K in this job.


ETSU alumni like Johnson City so much that they tend to stick around after graduation, with around one in five grads staying on to find permanent employment. Another city that attracts a wealth of ETSU grads is Kingsport, Tenn.; given its high compensation ($66K is the average salary), the city's popularity should come as no surprise. For comparison, the lowest-paying city popular with ETSU alumni is Lebanon, Va., which offers a median salary of $49K. Nearby Knoxville, Tenn. is also a top pick for ETSU grads, as is Nashville, Tenn.

Degree Major

ETSU grads who hold a medical degree can expect to fare better than most fellow alumni, earning an average approximately $155K per year. On the other end of the spectrum, those with a Some college coursework with no degree tend to do the worst in terms of salary, making an average around $28K per year.


Former Buccaneers who have experience with Budget Management can expect to make 60 percent more than other alumni ($81K on average). Microsoft Office is a common skill among ETSU alumni — one in ten grads mention using it at work. Competency in Customer Service, Microsoft Excel, and Operations Management also warrants excellent remuneration.

Benefits and Perks

Although approximately half of the respondents are compensated for vacation days, only one in three grads are paid for sick time. Most alumni participate in a 401(k) retirement savings plan. For this school, a large number of graduates are the recipients of health benefits, and a majority of graduates pick up dental plans, too. Other benefits awarded to East Tennessee State University alumni include life insurance, a casual working environment, tuition reimbursement, and a company-subsidized cell phone.
