ETSU alumni belong to a wide range of sectors. A few fields in which grads tend to find work include clinical care, public K-12 education, and the chemical manufacturing industry. The most popular professional field seems to be the health care industry. Following graduation, ETSU students earn an average of $51K.


The most generous salaries among ETSU alumni are reportedly earned by Software Engineers, whose median earnings come to $80K, followed by IT Business Analysts (about $68K) and Systems Analysts ($64K). Staff Accountants get the short end of the stick when it comes to salary; grads report making an average of approximately $32K in this job.


Graduates of ETSU seem to enjoy living in Johnson City, and one in five grads wind up living and working there after graduation. ETSU alumni seeking the highest salaries end up in Kingsport, Tenn., which offers a median salary of $66K. On the flipside, the lowest-paying city popular among ETSU grads is Greeneville, Tenn. (median compensation is around $42K). Close-by Knoxville, Tenn. and Nashville, Tenn. are also desirable cities among ETSU alumni.

Degree Major

A medical degree earns ETSU students the most money after college (an average $190K per year). Those holding a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Accounting are less fortunate in terms of earnings, bringing in approximately $35K on average per year.


Customer Service is a popular skill among ETSU alumni, with nearly one in ten grads reporting using it on the job. People Management commands a pay premium of 14 percent for former Buccaneers. Also considered top-notch skills are Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and Project Management.

Benefits and Perks

Paid vacation days are a given for approximately half of the alumni, but only one in three grads are rewarded with paid sick leave. A large number of respondents participate in a 401(k) retirement savings plan. Health coverage is awarded to a large number of graduates, and dental insurance is issued to a fair number of alumni as well. Additional benefits handed to East Tennessee State University alumni include life insurance, a casual working environment, tuition reimbursement, and a company-subsidized cell phone.
