The consulting industry, the software development industry, and software as a service (SAAS) development are just a few of the areas in which NU grads find work. The education industry registers as the most common industry among alumni. Median pay for those who graduated from NU amounts to approximately $71K.

After graduation, women go on to earn an average of around $62K per year compared to men, who earn $82K.

The most lucrative professionals among NU alumni are Senior Software Engineers; they earn a median annual salary of $108K. Also approaching the top of the pay scale at $99K and $86K, respectively, are Materials Scientists and Marketing Directors. Sliding in near the bottom are Assistant Editors, who report earnings of about $38K.

Chicago, Ill. is a hot spot for NU alum. NU alumni seeking the highest salaries end up in Los Angeles, Calif., which offers a median salary of $90K. Though New York, N.Y. takes the cake for lowest pay among NU grads (the median salary is approximately $51K there), it remains a common destination for former students. San Francisco, Calif. and Washington, DC are also desirable cities.

Degree Major

A Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (CS) will compensate NU grads at a much higher rate than other degrees — these alums rake in $129K on average per year. Those holding a B.A. in Communication are less fortunate in terms of earnings, bringing in about $50K on average per year.

Project Management is a popular skill among NU alumni, with roughly one in five grads reporting using it on the job. Strategic Marketing commands a pay premium of 34 percent for former Wildcats. Experience with Marketing Communications, Data Analysis, and Editing is highly valued as well.

Benefits and Perks

Only one in three grads for this school enjoy paid vacation days and about one in four survey participants get paid sick time. It is no small feat that a large number of alums are given health coverage, and a fair number of former students accept dental insurance. Most former students participate in a 401(k) program. Graduates of Northwestern University are also recipients of a casual working environment, life insurance, a company-subsidized cell phone, and flexible hours.

Related Schools

Among alumni of similar schools, George Washington University grads (who make an average of $73K) earn salaries most similar to NU alumni. The University of Chicago, the University of Notre Dame, and Case Western Reserve University are also similar to NU.
