Professionally, the manufacturing industry, the education industry, and the retail industry are popular business areas among SIU alumni. The most popular field is the health care industry. Those with a degree from SIU make an average of approximately $60K.


A gender wage gap becomes apparent after college, with female graduates earning only $52K on average compared to $69K for male graduates.


The biggest paychecks among SIU alumni are earned by Electrical Engineers — these former students make a median salary of $85K per year. The next biggest paychecks go to Software Engineers (around $75K) and Executive Directors (about $70K). Collecting the smallest paychecks are Operations Managers — they bring in $51K.


Home to a large number of SIU alums, Chicago, Ill. is by far the most attractive city for these former students. Peoria, Ill. is another hot spot for SIU grads, where salaries rank at the top of the pay scale (compensation averages out to approximately $69K). Among popular cities, the lowest average pay is found in Carbondale at $36K. Regardless of salary, a large portion of Southern Illinois University Carbondale grads opt to live in the area following graduation. Other popular cities include St. Louis, Mo. and Marion, Ill.

Degree Major

A medical degree earns SIU students the most money after college (an average $206K per year). Those holding a Bachelor of Science in Accounting are less fortunate in terms of earnings, bringing in $41K on average per year.


Many former SIU students are familiar with Project Management, and about a seventh of grads move on to positions where this experience is utilized. Engineering Design commands a pay premium of 32 percent for former Salukis. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and Customer Service are among other dominant skills.

Benefits and Perks

Though vacation and sick days are paid for some, these benefits are reported by the minority of graduates (two-fifths of alumni and one in three grads, respectively). To plan for old age, a fair number of alums maintain savings accounts through a company's 401(k) plan. Health coverage is awarded to a strong majority of alumni, and dental insurance is issued to a fair number of alumni as well. Southern Illinois University Carbondale graduates also take advantage of life insurance, a casual working environment, a company-subsidized cell phone, and tuition reimbursement.
