SIU alumni can most commonly be found in the education industry, the manufacturing industry, and the aerospace and defense industry, though they are employed throughout a wide range of sectors. The health care industry is the sector most highly represented among alumni. Those with an education from SIU earn an average of $60K.
In the SIU alumni community, men make a median salary of about $69K compared to their female counterparts, who earn $51K.
Among SIU alumni, those working as Software Engineers report the highest median pay of $76K, followed by Electrical Engineers (approximately $75K), and Account Managers (around $73K). Salaries are anything but generous for Operations Managers, where earnings rank lowest on the pay scale at $50K.
Many SIU grads end up living in Chicago, deeming it the most popular city for former students of this school. Another city that attracts a wealth of SIU grads is Dallas; given its high compensation (around $86K is the average salary), the city's popularity should come as no surprise. Among popular cities, the lowest pay is found in Carbondale at $38K. Regardless of salary, a large portion of Southern Illinois University Carbondale grads opt to live in the area following graduation. Graduates also relocate to St. Louis and Marion.
The highest paychecks can be found at The Boeing Company, where some SIU grads go to work for pay averaging $108K. Though compensation is lowest at Caterpillar, Inc. — average pay amounts to $82K — this is where many students go on to find work.
Financial compensation is highest for SIU grads with a medical degree (earnings climb to $160K per year). Those with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting face salaries on the lower end, coming in close to about $45K per year.
Knowledge of Engineering Design seems to be related to bigger paychecks; in fact, skilled alumni bring in salaries that are 39 percent more than their former classmates' salaries (approximately $83K). SIU grads are usually competent in Project Management, and roughly one in seven alumni continue practicing this skill in their career. In addition, those who are savvy in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and Customer Service are also considered highly skilled.
Only two-fifths of alumni for this school enjoy paid vacation days and about one in three grads get paid sick time. Most respondents report contributing to a 401(k). It is no small feat that a fair portion of alumni are given health coverage, and a fair portion of survey participants accept dental insurance. Other benefits awarded to Southern Illinois University Carbondale alumni include life insurance, a casual working environment, a company-subsidized cell phone, and tuition reimbursement.
University of Mississippi graduates, who earn around $60K on average, make a similar amount to SIU grads. The University of Memphis, Ohio University-Main Campus, and Kansas State University are also similar to SIU.
