Industry

Former SU students are professionally suited for a wide range of fields including the chemical manufacturing industry, the engineering services industry, and the manufacturing industry. The most popular professional field seems to be the health care industry. Starting salaries of about $58K are common among SU grads.

Gender

A gender wage gap becomes apparent after college, with female graduates earning only $55K on average compared to $69K for male graduates.

Jobs

In the SU alumni professional community, Reliability Engineers make the highest median pay ($90K).

Locations

For reasons other than money, SU grads are most commonly found still living in Baton Rouge, where median pay sits at the bottom of the pay scale (approximately $49K). Houston is on the other end of the salary spectrum, offering top-notch pay and a median salary of $90K; it's no wonder that SU grads are attracted to this city. Other popular cities include Plano and New Orleans.

Degree Major

A graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering (EE) from SU can rake in a whopping around $106K per year, more than any other degree from this school. Graduates holding a Bachelor of Science in Accounting fare the worst in terms of compensation with yearly salaries of approximately $53K.

Skills

Many SU grads have knowledge of Microsoft Excel, with close to one-seventh of alumni using this program on the clock. Former Jaguars with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) abilities can expect to make nearly double their former classmates (about $110K). Other prime know-hows include Project Management, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Office.

Benefits and Perks

Lacking in the benefits department, just two-fifths of alumni report compensation for sick days and only one-third of alumni get vacation time. A solid majority of former students set aside retirement funds in an employer-sponsored 401(k). A strong majority of alumni have medical plans, and most survey participants have dental insurance. Alumni of Southern University and A & M College also take in life insurance, a casual working environment, tuition reimbursement, and flexible hours.

Related Schools

Median pay for McNeese State University grads is $57K, making their salaries most similar to those of SU grads. Other schools similar to SU include Southeastern Louisiana University, Northwestern State University of Louisiana, and Stephen F Austin State University.
