Industry

Former SU students are professionally suited for a wide range of fields including the engineering services industry, the chemical manufacturing industry, and the oil and gas field services industry. The majority of alumni accept jobs in the health care industry. The average starting salary for a graduate of SU is $60K.

Jobs

The SU alumni who make the most are Reliability Engineers; they report a median pay of about $90K.

Locations

Many SU students are Dallas, Texas-bound following college. It is no surprise that Houston, Texas, which hands out the biggest paychecks (the average salary is $94K), is another of the most popular spots for former SU students. Though median pay is subpar (around $65K) relative to popular cities, choosing to stay in Baton Rouge after graduation is a common decision made by many alumni who have developed a love for the area. Other popular cities include Plano, Texas and New Orleans, La.

Degree Major

Among the highest-paid SU alumni are those with a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering (EE) — they earn close to approximately $105K on average per year. Those with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting face salaries on the lower end, coming in at an average $63K per year.

Skills

Competency in Project Management translates into above-average pay for former Jaguars — they earn 69 percent more than their fellow graduates. Microsoft Excel is a common skill among SU alumni — around a sixth of grads mention using it at work. Demonstrated ability in Project Management, Microsoft Office, and Accounting rank among leading skills as well.

Benefits and Perks

Benefits include paid time off, but vacation days are more heavily handed out than sick days; just over two-fifths of alumni report receiving the former, but only one-third of alumni report receiving the latter. It is no small feat that a strong majority of alums are given health coverage, and most grads accept dental insurance. A fair number of grads set up a 401(k) to save for retirement. Southern University and A & M College grads also enjoy benefits like life insurance, a casual working environment, tuition reimbursement, and flexible hours.

Related Schools

Compensation averages $60K for Troy University alumni, making their earnings most comparable to SU grads. Other schools similar to SU include Southeastern Louisiana University, McNeese State University, and Northwestern State University of Louisiana.
