The most popular professional field seems to be the education industry. Starting salaries of around $62K are the median among SU grads.

Baton Rouge, La. is a hot spot for SU alum. It is also not uncommon to find former SU students living and working in Houston, Texas — this top-paying city is a popular destination with a median salary of $78K. Though Lafayette, La. takes the cake for lowest pay among SU grads (the median salary is $46K there), it remains a common destination for former students.

Degree Major

Among the highest-paid SU alumni are those with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (ME) — they earn close to $83K on average per year. A Master of Arts (MA) is less advantageous in terms of earnings; alums with this degree are the lowest earners with a median annual pay of $46K.

Microsoft Word is a common skill among SU alumni — slightly less than one-fifth of grads mention using it at work. Former Jaguars with Engineering Design abilities can expect to make 63 percent more than their former classmates (approximately $101K). Other prime know-hows include Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, and Project Management.

Benefits and Perks

Though vacation and sick days are paid for some, these benefits are reported by the minority of graduates (two-fifths of alumni and one-fifth of alumni, respectively). A strong majority of grads enjoy benefits like health insurance, while a fair number of respondents receive dental plans, too. A fair number of alums allocate some part of their earnings to a company-sponsored 401(k) savings plan. Other benefits awarded to Southern University and A & M College alumni include life insurance, a casual working environment, tuition reimbursement, and flexible hours.

Related Schools

University of Texas at Tyler grads bring in salaries of around about $63K, making them the most similar to SU alumni in terms of earnings. Other schools similar to SU include Southeastern Louisiana University, McNeese State University, and Northwestern State University of Louisiana.
