My Dream Job
A web designer is a job that I can turn into a home based business. I would like to set up my own web server service. Then I could sell web space and design in a single package.
Never Stop Learning
Computer based training is a great way to learn new technology quickly and it is affordable for anyone. I am not big on certifications, but I must say they will open doors especially when dealing with inexperienced recruiters, managers, human resource people.
Don't get trapped in office politics.
It's a bad idea to involve in office politics. Try to stay away from it. Sometime you don't have choice and you have to take one side. Try to do a balancing act and don't get involved.
Be a commodity
Be a commodity that means you are needed, replaceable but not an easy replacement, once in that space you will not have to ask for a raise just make a gester and it will come Performance is the way, good tip goingin is if they will not match your ultimate salary ask for it based on performance in 6 months to a year review. Now it is built in and try to keep that going on a yearly basis.
Do not wait!
When I changed careers I took the excepted pay cut. I took a temp position, worked hard and took on several extra responsibilities. Once I became permanent, I was extremely disappointed with my pay, but I was told I could move up and that I would be able to get a great bonus. I received an excellent review, exceeding expectations, but only received around a $0.30 raise. They hired someone else to fill my position and I moved on to a complete different position. None of the Managers ever spoke with me about my new position and more importantly pay! They continue to avoid the meeting and they continue to blow me off. I should have left after getting such a small raise, I am at least 10k underpaid and continue to see new hires come in with no experience, same background and degree for as much as 18k more.

Relevant Education
I've found that pursuing Continue Education and/or Graduate Certificate programs from accredited institutions shows your commitment to the company and the kind of job you want to do for them. For me, it has paid off in promotions and pay increases well in excess of tuition costs.
Be sure you have something to work on
My "manager" (boss) gave me a finished project to work on, prohibited me from doing anything else, and then said I had low productivity - just in time for the layoffs. Fight like hell to get a task that can show visible productivity. Even though productivity is the result of the sum total of ALL factors, including the ones that the boss is responsible for - you're the one who will get all the blame. Managers like to assume that productivity is like height - it's solely an attribute of the individual, like height.
No Raise
I don't think i'm paid fairly. I see others getting a higher pay than me when we do the exact same kind of work. I think i deserve a good raise.
