Job Description for Management Consultant

Management consultants develop, recommend, and implement business improvements for companies. In order to do this, they consult with company leaders to identify the business's strengths and weaknesses in order to develop an improvement plan. Additionally, they train clients on business development processes. Occasionally management consultants will deal with modeling, analysis, and research for specific business design efforts. This is a highly team-focused career. Management consultants need to be customer-focused and able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, with their clients. They need to be flexible and adaptable in order to accommodate their clients' specific needs. Candidates for these positions must have demonstrated strong leadership skills in previous positions, as management consulting is all about leadership and directing.
Management consultants can work in a variety of industries, since companies everywhere want to maximize their potential. They will primarily work within their clients' standard business hours, but may be required to put in some extra time on their own to finish up their recommended business plans. A bachelor's degree and 5+ years of related experience is the minimum for most positions, although some will require a master's degree. Positions can either be part-time or full-time (generally full-time) and may require travel. A passion for coaching and training others is a must, and management consultants need to be energetic and passionate about their work. Moderate to advanced skill with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is required, as is the willingness to learn how to use other applicable software programs. Knowledge of statistics is useful when it comes to analyzing company data to pinpoint areas of improvement.
